Good question! The answer totally depends on the size of the boxer. Those who fight in heavier divisions (usually about 147 lbs and up) typically only will compete in 10 oz gloves. And those who fight in the lower categories, including welterweight will opt to go for 8 oz gloves. A good rule of thumb to remember is that boxers want to strike and answer back with substantial speed and force. With keeping that in mind, a mini-fly weight or a straw weight definitely aren’t going to reach for heavier gloves, they’ll only slow them down.
